ABOUT THE FUND

What is this fund?

A permanent scholarship created by Hickory High alumni and managed by the North Carolina Community Foundation (NCCF) for long-term sustainability.

What is the goal?

Our short-term goal is to To build a $25,000 endowment that funds an annual scholarship for a Hickory High senior starting in 2027, and longer-term, we are looking to reach an endowment amount of ~$100k capable of granting two scholarships per year. 

Why NCCF?

The North Carolina Community Foundation (NCCF) provides nonprofit status, tax deductibility, investment management, and full administration.

SCHOLARSHIPS

What can scholarships be used for?

  • 4-year colleges or universities

  • Technical, trade, or vocational schools

Funds are paid directly to the school:

  • 4-year: tuition, books, and possibly living expenses

  • Technical: tuition and books

When do scholarships begin?

As early as spring 2027 once the fund is fully endowed.

How are recipients selected?

A local committee reviews applications, including:

  • Faculty member

  • Career counselor

  • Alumni volunteer

  • Sandi Fotheringham (former director, Hickory Public Schools Education Foundation)​

Are donations tax-deductible?

Yes, through NCCF.

How can I help?

Make a gift to https://www.nccommunityfoundation.org/hickoryhighschool of any size and share the effort with fellow alumni.

How does it work?

  • Donations go to NCCF and are immediately tax-deductible

  • Funds are held until $25,000 is reached

  • Once funded, it becomes a permanent endowment

  • Scholarships are awarded annually from earnings

Timeline

Target September 30, 2026
If not reached, advisors may extend the timeline or distribute funds to the school

Who is responsible for what?

Three-part partnership:

  • NCCF: financial management and scholarship distribution

  • Alumni volunteers: outreach and communication

  • Hickory High School: local partner, with Sandi Fotheringham as liaison
